➡️ Description
I am Barbara Scott, and currently a doctoral student at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
My research programme involves the psychosocial benefits and impact of reflexology for those who are experiencing difficulties conceiving or have reproductive health issues. It is designed to determine the impact of reflexology in supporting this group of clients and to educate and inform stakeholders and therefore enable reflexology to become more widely available for those that would like to use it as a means of support.
I am excited to be able to share the results of both this pilot study and the ongoing research that is being undertaken. The results so far, demonstrate that reflexology provides many positive benefits psychologically but also in terms of physical symptoms and beyond for participants.
The initial study was a piece of qualitative research and involved undertaking semi-structured interviews with randomised participants. The data produced a range of emerging themes, some of which were surprising. However, participants reported that when using reflexology, they experienced what they describe as ‘life changing’ benefits, which included changes to physical symptoms, improved mood and well-being, improvement to psychosocial well-being and economic benefits due to less time being taken away from work.
I am currently undertaking a larger mixed methods study which should provide both a quantitative result combined with a further and larger qualitative study. I am delighted to be able to share this research at the conference, which will be the first time that these results will be presented at a reflexology conference.
