The need for integrative and personalized medicine has now become ever more urgent. Our current medicine is failing spectacularly. Chronic disease is ever increasing – especially in areas such as obesity and mental health. Life expectancy has plateaued. Health systems are becoming inaccessible, and when accessible, unaffordable and unable to recruit sufficient clinical professionals. Today the misery on our streets and among our clinicians is all too evident. Integrative medicine—care integrated around the patient rather than the patient having to integrate different medical approaches whether it be complementary or conventional as in the past— is the model that will enable and empower each of us, including clinicians, to look at other possibilities before having to reach for the traditional prescription pad.
